8 Foods You Can Still Enjoy in Your Healthy Lifestyle
There are plenty of foods you can still enjoy in your healthy lifestyle. Committing to a healthier lifestyle doesnβt mean you canβt enjoy some of your favorite treats and indulgences once in a while.
It just means you either have to make your food choices work into your allotted macros or calories for the day, or you have to find healthier alternatives.
This may be as simple as switching from conventional products to organic, ethical, and sustainable products. Or it could mean you have to substitute something blatantly unhealthy with something that will honor and nourish your body while maintaining your healthy lifestyle.
There are foods you can still enjoy and indulge in, you just want to be mindful of quality and quantity. When I am struggling with those unhealthy choices I like to ask myself βis this blessing my body?β and sometimes the answer is βyes! that treat is without a doubt a blessing.β
Here are the 8 Foods You Can Still Enjoy in Your Healthy Lifestyle.
Red Wine

Yes, ladies and gents, the occasional glass of red wine is one of those foods you can still enjoy in your healthy lifestyle.
Having one or two glasses a month is plenty for me and often, Iβll go months without a drop of alcohol, so you bet that when I do indulge in the consumption of alcohol it is high vibe and high quality. This is why I like biodynamic wines.
The Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association defines biodynamic farming as βa spiritual-ethical-ecological approach to agriculture, gardens, food production and nutrition.β The entire ecosystem of the vineyard is viewed as a whole and the idea is to create a self sustaining system so there is little to no waste.
The use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is forbidden and much of the natural fertilization comes from the animals that live on (and mingle with) the vineyard. There is a strict maintenance calendar that is followed leading up to harvest. In the wine preparation, there is little added into the process, so the wine is as natural as possible.
Frey Vineyards Biodynamic Field Blend is a good and affordable entry point into the world of biodynamic wines that can be found in most organic grocery stores.
Dark Chocolate
Skip the milk chocolate and opt for dark chocolate. This is a food you can still enjoy in your healthy lifestyle.
I distinctly remember the joy I experienced the very first time I had dark chocolate as a child. I loved it so much more than βregularβ chocolate and could not get enough of the bitter, sweet, dark, roasted, and complex flavor profile. I was immediately converted.
The issue with milk chocolate is that is contains higher fat, more sugar, and less cacao or cocoa. Calorie for calorie, milk chocolate is more expensive than dark chocolate, nutritionally speaking.
Dark chocolate contains less fat, usually less sugar, and has a higher percentage of cocoa or cacao. Itβs also full of magnesium, antioxidants, selenium, and zinc.
If chocolate is what youβre really after, youβre only getting jipped if you opt for milk chocolate. Iβm a huge fan of Hu Kitchen, Chocolove, and Endangered Species. For those opting for 0 sugar try Lilyβs.
Nuts and Trail Mix

Nuts are great foods you can still enjoy in your healthy lifestyle. They are a plant based source of healthy fats and protein.
Opt for raw nuts to get the most unadultured vitamins and minerals from each crunchy handful, as roasting and other cooking processes can adulture the nutritional value.
You can even enjoy a bit of trail mix. Ideally you would make your own homemade trail mix, but if youβre in a pinch opt for the highest quality trail mix possible.
Stick to the varieties that are mostly raw nuts, dark chocolate, and unsweetened dried fruit. Steer clear of any mixes that contain overly roasted nuts, milk chocolate, yogurt balls or yogurt covered fruit, pretzels and other carbs, and sugar coated dried fruit.
Cheese
A little salty, a little creamy, and a little tart, cheese is a good source of fats.
Cheese is another very satisfying category of foods you can still enjoy in a healthy lifestyle.
While there may be ethical implications with the dairy industry, if you do decide to indulge in some cheese, make sure it is from pasture raised, grass fed and finished animals. A happy animal will produce a much higher vibrational product, and it turn will be a much healthier choice.
Cow cheese and goat cheese are lovely options. I like to parouse the farmers market for various varieties of high quality grass fed and finished artisan cheeses. When Iβm in a pinch the Kerrygold Dubliner Cheddar Cheese is a good option.
Dried Fruit

Sparingly, dried fruit is a category of foods you can still enjoy in your healthy lifestyle. They can be a great substitute for candy and can be a great on-the-go option to satisfy that sweet tooth.
Keep in mind that since all of the water has been taken out of this fruit it is much easier to over consume dried fruit, and thus consume more sugar and carbohydrates that one would eating regular fruit.
Look for the non sweetened variety. Some of my favorite options are dried mango, pineapple, cranberries, and blueberries. 365 by Whole Foods, Trader Joeβs, or Natierra are great options.
Cured Meats
If you havenβt already noticed, many of the items on this list can be found on a charcuterie board. And no charcuterie board is complete without a selection of cured meats.
We all know that meat is a good source of protein, so enjoy a few bites of your favorite hams, smoked fish, sausage, and cured wild game. Just make sure not to overdo it as cured meats can be high in salt and sodium, which can be dehydrating and cause fluid retention, puffiness, and bloating,
Personally, it is an extremely rare occasion that I will eat cured meats as I am mostly plant based, but when I do it is usually wild game.
Any Fruit

Fruits are great foods you can still enjoy in your healthy lifestyle and a good alternative to candy. Fruits have so many vitamins, nutrients, minerals, and micronutrients itβs hard to go wrong.
While you can purchase conventional on thick skinned fruits such as bananas, citrus, melons, and avocados, itβs best to opt for organic with any fruit in which the skin is consumed such as apples, stone fruit, and berries.
Be mindful of your sugar intake.
Fermented and preserved vegetables
This category has some of the best foods you can still enjoy in your healthy lifestyle.
If youβve never had pickled okra stop what youβre doing and go try some stat.
Fermented and preserved vegetables are yet another great food you can still enjoy in a healthy lifestyle that is often found paired with a great charcuterie board.
Pop a few different varieties of olives, try some different pickled vegetables and other brines.
One of the best options for food you can still enjoy in a healthy lifestlye is fermented live culture vegetables. For a dose of gut healthy probiotics try munching on non pasturized varieties of kimchi, sauerkraut, or fermented vegetables.
Since live cultures need to be kept cool in order to stay alive, you can find the non-pasturized versions in the refrigerated section or chilled produce sections of the grocery store. Stay away from the shelf stable jars as these have been heated to such high temps that much of the probiotics are zapped. I enjoy Wildbrine and Farmhouse Culture.

This is a great list! Love it! My favorites are red wine and dark chocolate. And like you, I also don’t need a lot of red wine. 1 or 2 glasses a month are enough for me as well, but when I drink it, I really enjoy it!
Nathalia
I love a glass of red wine and a decadent charcuterie board, which includes all of the above!

I never knew red wine is healthy in moderation! I am glad to learn this because it is my favorite.

Thanks! Trying to life healthier. Glad I can still drink some red wine π
Nathalia
Of course! I keep my very limited as a personal preference because I simply don’t enjoy alcohol much. Just keep in mind that it is calorically expensive and has little nutritional value compared to non-alcoholic alternatives. Alcohol is also a carcinogen and absolutely blasts the gut flora (just like rubbing alcohol does as a pre-vaccine topical skin preparation). Yikes!
Alex
As long as I still have a glass of wine and a few nuts, and cheese, I’m ok with all of the other limitations π
Nathalia
Yes! Writing this had be thinking of the most amazing charcuterie board π
Bonnie Smith
Very informative! You literally had me at cheese!!
Nathalia
So many people LOVE cheese. It lights up your opiate receptors, because cheese has naturally occurring trace amounts of opiates! It doesn’t trigger me, but it’s definitely a difficult thing for some people to cut out or manage.
Heather
Glad to know dark chocolate is still on the list. π I’m trying to scale back on sugar and snacking so these are very helpful, thank you!
Nathalia
Hu Kitchen chocolate bars are completely natural and don’t contain refined sugar, cane sugar, or sugar alcohols. You can also try chocolate sweetened with stevia like Lily’s.

I would have trouble getting by without dark chocolate and red wine, so I am happy to find them on your list. I am also a big fan of cheddar cheese: looking forward to giving Kerrygold Dubliner Cheddar Cheese a try.

Thanks for this list of treats you can still enjoy as part of a healthy lifestyle. For me, red wine, dark chocolate, and nuts are all decadent treats that I look forward to and enjoy. In moderation they can even provide some health benefits! It’s also important not to feel like I’m depriving myself or I won’t maintain good nutrition.
Nathalia
You’re spot on, Katrina! Everything in moderation π

Nathalia
Yes, of course! Everything in moderation is key.
Taylor
This is a great list! I think when people hear “healthy living” they assume that it means cutting out all of their favorite foods and only eating veggies lol. But there are still tons of food alternatives that taste good AND are healthy.
Nathalia
There really are so many great alternatives. If it comes down to it, you can really eat anything whether it’s “healthy” and “clean” or not. It’s just a matter of fitting it in and remembering that those foods that aren’t under those two categories will be harder for your body to process.
Sam
Loved your post! Extremely helpful for people who are starting to love a healthier lifestyle β€οΈ

Nathalia
Me too! I love either starting my day with cacao or munching on a square of chocolate mid day.
Navita Bhatia
This is a super handy list, Nathali. Didn’t know much about fermented vegetables. Will try to get hold of some. Nuts and dark chocolates are already among favorites, the only thing I need to take care about them, is portion controlπ
asteid
so right! as a person who went to a med school, these foods were often recommended to us by our health teacher. some are said to have a huge impact on our memory as well!
Nathalia
How wonderful to hear! I always try to stay on top of the latest integrative and holistic peer reviewed medical research π
Nathalia
Yes, the portion control is always the trickiest part. I like making chocolate nut clusters so that I can easily see how much I’m eating.

Chesse and dried fruits are my favorites in this list. Although I wouldn’t say no to nuts as I’m used to have some peanuts on a daily basis.
Apart from that, I think all kinds of food in general can be a source of a healthy lifestyle as long as the person draws the line to him/herself and moderate his/her diet.
Anyway, I took pleasure reading this article which was very informative. Keep up the good work !
Nathalia
I completely agree! So glad you like it.

Love the article! I’m a big dark chocolate fan & it’s my go to for a sweet treat. Always trying to get my fill of good healthy foods first is key!

Sarah Tucker
Oh man, I need to lose 50 pounds and I’m having trouble finding the motivation but this article really helped – I can still have some of my favs and change my health. It’s time!
Nathalia
Yes!!! It’s really all about moderation and portion control. Technically you can still have any of your fave treats, you just have to be able to fit it in and strike a balance between satiating cravings and satiating hunger (because often those treats aren’t very filling but they’re high calorie)
Thomas
I love chocolate with a passion. Ive been on a chocolate detox for awhile but am looking for healthy alternatives to when I start to incorporate it into my diet again.
PS. Any chance you have a recipe for a chocolate chip protein cookie? That and a small glass of soy or almond milk would be delicious!!!!!!
Nathalia
You and I share a passion π I do have a chocolate chip cookie recipe that is scheduled to be posted. Keep a look out!
